Discovering Geology

Group Description :

Welcome to our new Discovering Geology group!

Geology is the study of the Earth’s origin, structure, and history—and that’s exactly what we’ll be exploring, with a special focus on how it all relates to us living here in North Yorkshire.

No prior knowledge is needed—just an interest in the world beneath your feet! We’ll keep things as accessible and non-technical as possible, especially to start, while still offering plenty to learn and discover.

Our group will explore a wide range of geological topics, including:

  • The basic types of rocks and how they form

  • The geology of North Yorkshire—how our rocks shape the landscape and even influence the local economy

  • The Earth’s 4.5-billion-year history and how it’s recorded in stone

We’ll also connect geology to everyday interests like walking, photography, and wildflower spotting.

Meetings will normally involve some travel (via car sharing) to various locations in North Yorkshire for our monthly field trips. These trips will give us the chance to see rock formations and fossil sites in their natural setting and will be accopmanied with notes on what you can expect to see and how they fit in with the geology of our wider area.

You’re always encouraged to bring along any rocks or fossils you’ve found (not bought!)—along with where you found them—to share with the group. Photos are also welcome!

As with all U3A groups, what we do depends on your enthusiasm and involvement. We look forward to learning together and making geology fun, local, and hands-on.

Why not join our WhatsApp group to more easily share articles and photos with each other. Look for "Easingwold u3a Discovering Geology"
